The skills system got a revamp, and although it may seem confusing at first, I really love it. I can't even think of anything I dislike about the game from the top of my head, the new battle grid takes time getting used to but it's nothing unbearable. HoMM4 is criminally underrated, I think HoMM fans people need to give it a second try before giving up on it. The AI is a bit dumb, but easy to take advantage of once you've learned all of its moves. Creatures that can cast spells now allow you to pick which spell to cast. And you can explore the map with creatures without heroes, meaning you no longer have to pay 2500 gold just for a scout. The heroes can directly participate in battles which is something I miss not being able to do in all other HoMM games, you can level up a hero to be able to take on a black dragon all by himself. It introduced a whole bunch of new mechanics, many of which improve the game by a longshot, most notable ones being the caravan building, which helps you transport creatures from external dwellings and between towns, and not having to wait until monday to purchase new creatures. I guess people just really hate change, especially the diehard HoMM3 fans, because of how different the gameplay is. I love it way more than HoMM3, it's tied with HoMM2 for me when it comes to replayability.
